Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today participated in the 45th Anniversary Celebrations of The Art of Living in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Reflecting on the auspiciousness of the occasion, the Prime Minister described the uniqueness of the morning enriched by the welcome through Vedic mantras by children, the darshan of Lord Ganesha, Shri Shri Ravi Shankar Ji’s 70th year, and Art of Living’s 45th anniversary celebrations. “These are moments that will always remain in my memories,” remarked Shri Modi.

Marking the inauguration of the divine and grand Meditation Temple, the Prime Minister affirmed the importance of such dedicated institutions and extended best wishes to the  Art of Living family for their newest sanctuary. “When resolve is clear and work is done with the spirit of service, then every effort yields pleasant results,” Shri Modi asserted.

Appreciating the distinct ambience of Bengaluru, the Prime Minister highlighted how the city is globally recognized not only for software and services but also for elevating India’s cultural identity and spiritual consciousness. “Spirituality and spiritual consciousness too have been given new heights by this city,” observed Shri Modi.

Tracing the deep roots of yoga, meditation, and pranayama as integral parts of India’s values, the Prime Minister noted the global influence of India’s spiritual heritage and its role in inspiring numerous institutions. “Today people across the world are influenced by India’s spiritual values, and from these ancient values many institutions of India too have been drawing inspiration,” affirmed Shri Modi.

Drawing inspiration from these ancient spiritual values, the Prime Minister recalled how Shri Shri Ravi Shankar Ji sowed the seed of Art of Living 45 years ago, which has now grown into a huge banyan tree. “Today it stands before us as a huge banyan tree whose thousands of branches are touching the lives of countless people across the world,” remarked Shri Modi.

Highlighting India’s rich tapestry of diversity encompassing languages, traditions, customs, and worship practices, the Prime Minister posed the fundamental question about what binds these beautiful diversities together. “The answer is living not for oneself but for others,” asserted Shri Modi.

Quoting the ancient wisdom from the Puranas, the Prime Minister emphasized that serving others is virtue while causing pain is sin, underscoring that service is the natural character of Indian society. “Seva Paramo Dharma is the natural character of our society,” affirmed Shri Modi.

Noting that India’s many spiritual movements have ultimately expressed themselves through service to humanity, the Prime Minister expressed happiness at witnessing the same spirit reflected in every effort of Art of Living. Extending heartfelt wishes to every volunteer associated with Art of Living’s journey, the Prime Minister commended their dedication and service orientation.

Stressing that societal engagement is essential for any mission’s success, the Prime Minister emphasized that awakening social strength is fundamental to achieving important goals. He underscored his longstanding conviction that society possesses greater power than political systems and governments, and that no administration can truly succeed unless communities actively participate in nation-building. He cited the Swachh Bharat Mission as exemplary, noting that what began as a government initiative has become woven into the natural fabric of people’s lives, now advancing through society’s own momentum.Emphasizing that any campaign becomes successful when the power of society joins it, Shri Modi stressed, “Awakening the power of society for every such important mission is very necessary.”

Observing that active societal engagement enables collective solutions to the nation’s greatest challenges, the Prime Minister commended Art of Living for consistently channeling society’s strength in its initiatives. He praised the organisation’s social approach across development programs, whether through tree-planting campaigns, rural smart village centers, women’s and tribal empowerment initiatives, or mental health programs for incarcerated individuals. “These efforts contribute significantly to the country’s and society’s development journey,” Shri Modi noted.

Commending every individual present for prioritising youth empowerment, the Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of this focus given today’s rapid global transformations driven by scientific advancement and innovation. He observed that India is not merely participating in these changes but leading in numerous sectors, with particular achievements in digital payments, infrastructure expansion, and startup ecosystems. He highlighted that India’s youth are pioneering space technology and contributing to all such national successes. “India is not just participating in this change, it is also leading in many areas,” asserted Shri Modi .Crediting India’s youth for these achievements, the Prime Minister acknowledged Art of Living’s role in helping youth find solutions to modern-era challenges.

Acknowledging technology’s power to instantly connect distant individuals, the Prime Minister stressed the parallel necessity of strengthening people’s ability to connect with themselves. He asserted that India’s developed future depends on cultivating youth who are mentally peaceful, socially responsible, and sensitive to societal needs. He emphasized the critical role of institutions working on spiritual wellbeing, mental health, yoga, and meditation in fostering connection, belongingness, and collective responsibility, while simultaneously providing opportunities for cultural understanding. “A Viksit Bharat will be built through such youth, mentally peaceful, socially responsible, and sensitive toward society,” Shri Modi asserted.

Expressing confidence that the newly inaugurated meditation temple will serve as a sanctuary of peace and healing for thousands, the Prime Minister acknowledged that while society is already fulfilling its duties toward the nation admirably, he wished to place before them several important appeals for holistic national development.

Highlighting the crucial role organisations like Art of Living must play in advancing India’s comprehensive development, the Prime Minister urged particular attention to connecting farmers with natural farming practices. He framed sustainable agriculture as an expression of the Art of Living itself, emphasizing that preserving Mother Earth from chemicals constitutes both spiritual practice and environmental stewardship. “Adopting natural farming and saving Mother Earth from chemicals, this too is Art of Living,” Shri Modi affirmed.

Encouraging broader expansion of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, the Prime Minister linked environmental protection directly to the philosophy of living well. “Protecting the environment is also Art of Living,” he asserted, calling for renewed commitment to this mission.

Advocating for improved water management practices among farming communities through the “Per Drop, More Crop” initiative, the Prime Minister emphasized that societal cooperation would enhance outcomes. He stressed the urgency of this work given the approaching monsoon season, making it the ideal moment for widespread water conservation awareness. “Saving every drop of water is also Art of Living,” Shri Modi affirmed.

Expanding this vision of responsible living to encompass electricity conservation, elimination of single-use plastics, and promotion of locally-produced goods, the Prime Minister connected all these practices to the Art of Living philosophy. He highlighted the government’s Mission LiFE initiative, which promotes living with greater responsibility and awareness while maintaining harmony with nature. “This lifestyle that balances with nature is also Art of Living,” asserted Shri Modi.

The Prime Minister concluded by expressing confidence that the organisation will increasingly prioritise such critical issues in the coming days.

PM Modi Lauds Retiring Rajya Sabha Members, Calls Their Experience ‘Nation’s Asset’

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored retiring Rajya Sabha members and said their experience in parliament was a lasting asset to the nation and advised young legislators to learn the lessons of their seniors.

In responding to the members who are leaving in the upper house, Modi stated that these events are beyond politics, but above all they show respect to serving the people. He commented that the parliamentary terms can end, yet the contribution of long-term leaders to the life of a country does not stop.

The Prime Minister said in politics, there are no full stops, that the experience and works of experienced lawmakers are also a part of a democratic process in the country.

Outlining the works of the old parliamentarians, Modi named several old members like H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sharad Pawar as role models to be followed by the new members. He also stressed the need to commit itself to the duty of serving the people and that this commitment enhances the credibility of the institution.

The Prime Minister praised the behaviour of the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh, in dealing with proceedings especially when situations are difficult and also keeping members of the opposite party in his trust.

Considering the changes in the way parliament operates, Modi noted that the emergence of twenty-four-seven media coverage has shifted the character of politicking. Nevertheless, he said that the traditions of wit, debate and intellectual exchange still prevail in the parliamentary culture.

He emphasized the importance of the session of turnover in the Rajya Sabha, where every three years, a third of the members retires, as a means of continuity, with new ideas coming in. This, he said, assists in sustaining institutional memory as well as reinforcing democratic performance.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, which he referred to as an essential institution in the legislative process of India, Modi emphasized the role of the institution as a second opinion in legislation. He claimed that the bicameral form of governance enables more thorough questioning of decisions, which leads to more harmonious and sophisticated policy making.

The Prime Minister also reported that the retiring members were one of the members who served in the process of transferring the old building of Parliament to the new building to make a historical occasion in their careers.

He compared the Upper House to a great open university where members acquired experience about governance and national issues during their term in office. This is not just an experience that carries with it the contributions they make in Parliament but also prepares them to take further responsibility with the people even after leaving Parliament.

Ending his speech, Modi was sure that the members who are going will still have a significant role in the life of the people, whether in the formal political system or in the social work in general. He was appreciative of their efforts and he recognized their input in nation building.

This is a testament to the hard work, talent, influence and commitment of India in the 21st century. He said “today, India has joined those countries in the world, which manufacture such a huge aircraft carrier with indigenous technology. Today INS Vikrant has filled the country with a new confidence, and has created a new confidence in the country.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged and praised the contribution of the Navy, engineers of Cochin Shipyard, scientists and specially the workers who worked on the project. He also noted the happy and auspicious occasion of Onam that is adding even more happiness to the occasion.

Every part of INS Vikrant has its own merits, a strength, a development journey of its own. It is a symbol of indigenous potential, indigenous resources and indigenous skills. The steel installed in its airbase is also indigenous, developed by DRDO scientists and produced by Indian companies, he said.

Explaining the massive proportions of the Carrier, the Prime Minister said it is like a floating city. It produces electricity that is sufficient to power 5,000 households and the wiring used will reach Kashi from Kochi, he said. After Sushma Swaraj, Jaitley now goes under knife for kidney transplant

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s health has become a cause of national concern as the second-in-command in Modi’s government is all set to undergo a kidney transplant surgery at the AIIMS on Saturday, April 7.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which has apologized for its mistaken dialysis on a patient last week, said it has formed a special team under doctor V.K. Bansal to carry out the surgery on Jaitley and Sandeep Guleria, a specialist from Apollo Hospitals has also been roped in.

The new state-of-art Cardio-Neuro Tower in the AIIMS will be the place for today’s operation and it may be recalled that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj too underwent her kidney transplant here in December 2016.

Jaitley had tweeted on Thursday: “I am being treated for kidney related problems and certain infections that I have contracted. I am therefore currently working from controlled environment at home. The future course of my treatment would be determined by the doctors treating me.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, in his tweet wished the leader early recovery. “I’m truly sorry to hear this @arunjaitley ji. I pray for your speedy recovery,” he tweeted. Jaitley, 65, had earlier been operated upon for a gastric bypass in 2015 to loose weight after Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari underwent similar surgery.

Jaitley, who visited Singapore recently, had to cancel his other international trips, including his next week’s visit to London for the annual economic dialogue. Currently, he has cancelled all major appearances in the public and is working from home.

Since the recovery will take at least three months, the finance ministry will essentially be run by finance secretary Hasmukh Adhia with the PMO overseeing its function. Adhia, a Gujarat cadre IAS official and a long-time confidante of PM Narendra Modi, will report to him for the next three months. His retirement by end of this year, is likely to be given an extension, said The Wired quoting sources familiar with the developments.

Jaitley’s absence when Karnataka elections are being held next month may keep Modi tied to Delhi but PM is not likely to allot the ministry to other BJP leaders in view of its key role in implementing the welfare programs ahead of the 2019 elections.

Modi Assails Bargaining Style of India

In his ‘Mann Ki Baath’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed the countrymen not to bargain too much with autodrvers and vegetable vendors when they could spend huge amounts on their restaurant bills without a second thought.

Taking cue from a phone call from one Aparna from Pune who complained about her friend repeatedly bargaining over small amounts with auto drivers, Modi responded saying, “Sometimes certain things become a part of our habits that we don’t even realize that we are doing something wrong.”

Aparna reportedly told PM Modi, “I want to tell you about a friend of mine. She always tries to help others, but one habit of her bothers me. I went for shopping with her at a mall. She coolly spent two thousand rupees on a sari, and four hundred and fifty rupees on a pizza. Whereas, she haggled for a long time, over merely five rupees, with the auto driver, who took us to the mall. On the way back, we stopped to buy vegetables, and again she haggled with the vendors to save 4-5 rupees. I feel very bad. We spend extravagantly in high places, without a single thought, but when it comes to our hardworking brethren, we quarrel with them over small amounts. We don’t trust them.”

Abhorring such habits, PM Modi said, “Don’t you feel that whenever a vendor comes to your door to sell something, on his rounds, when we come into contact with small shopkeepers, vegetable sellers, auto rickshaw drivers – in fact any person who earns through sheer hard work – we start bargaining with him, haggling with him: ‘No not so much, make it two rupees less, five rupees less!'”

The same people, who go to dine at a fine restaurant, don’t even bother to check the bill, but pay the money, without thinking twice. “When it comes to someone poor, we just cannot resist bargaining. Have you ever wondered what a poor man goes through? It is not a matter of two or five rupees, it hurts him deeply, when he feels that you are questioning his honesty,” he said.

“Two or five rupees make no difference to your life, but have you thought how much heartache this petty habit of yours can cause him. Madam I am grateful to you for calling me with this touching message. I am certain that my countrymen, if they are in the habit of behaving in this way with the poor will now stop doing so,” he advised.
