“On the 75th anniversary of the historic Quit India movement, we salute all the great women & men who took part in the movement.

Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the entire nation came together with the aim of attaining freedom.

In 1942, the need of the hour was to free India from colonialism. Today, 75 years later the issues are different.

Let us pledge to free India from poverty, dirt, corruption, terrorism, casteism, communalism & create a ‘New India’ of our dreams by 2022.

PM greets the nation in Sanskrit on Sanskrit Day

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has greeted the nation on the Sanskrit Day and shared his greetings with the people in Sanskrit.
The Sanskrit text is as follows:
“भारतस्य समृद्धः इतिहासः संस्कृतिः परम्परा च संस्कृते अस्ति। संस्कृतस्य ज्ञानम् अस्मान् तेन समृद्ध-वैभवोपेत-अतीतेन सह योजयति।“
“संस्कृतप्रेमिभ्यः तथा च अस्याः सुन्दर्याः भाषायाः पठितृभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः संस्कृतदिवस-सन्दर्भे मम हार्दिक-शुभकामनाः।”
It implies that India’s rich history, culture and tradition are in Sanskrit. The knowledge of Sanskrit connects us with our rich literature, heritage and glorious past. On the occasion of Sanskrit Day I extend my heartfelt greetings to the scholars and students of this beautiful language.

Smt. Sharbati Devi, a 103 year old widow ties a Rakhi on PM

Smt. Sharbati Devi, a 103 year old widow, today visited the PM’s residence, and tied a Rakhi on Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi’s wrist on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

Smt. Sharbati Devi lost her brother about 50 years ago, and would always miss him, especially on Rakhi. Her son wrote to the Prime Minister and subsequently, the Prime Minister invited Smt. Sharbati Devi and her family to his residence today. Smt. Sharbati Devi was extremely delighted to meet the PM and tie a Rakhi. They had a wonderful interaction today.

PM announces ex-gratia for victims of building collapse in Mumbai

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved an ex- gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to a building collapse in Ghatkopar, Mumbai.

The Prime Minister has also approved Rs. 50,000 each for those injured due to the building collapse.

PM expresses grief on demise of Professor Yash Pal

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the demise of Indian scientist and educationist Professor Yash Pal.

” Pained by Professor Yash Pal’s demise. We have lost a brilliant scientist & academician who made a lasting contribution to Indian education.

Interacted with Professor Yash Pal extensively on many occasions including the National Children’s Science Congress in Gujarat in 2009.” the Prime Minister said.

PM Congratulates Kidambi Srikanth on Winning Australian Open

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian Badminton Player Kidambi Srikanth, on winning Australian Open Super Series.

“We are really proud of the victory of Kidambi Srikanth in the Australian Open. I congratulate him for yet another wonderful win”, the Prime Minister said.

Srikanth won the Australian Open over his Chinese counterpart Chen Long, finishing the game 22-20, 21-16 on Sunday, June 25, 2017.This is Srikanth’s 4th Super Series title, and first win over Chen Long in their six plays so far.

Ranked World No 11, Srikanth’s second straight title victory in a week after the Indonesian Open Super Series Premier last Sunday, sets him take on bigger names in the near future.

Srikanth took 11-9 lead at the break and gave in slightly to Long who made a return with three straight points at 12-11.Despite Chen’s game point with a cross court smash, Srikanth finally held the sway and won it 22-20.

In the second game too, Srikanth dominated with a five-point lead at 19-15 and finally sealed it with 21-16 to win the singles title.

Srikanth was honoured with Arjuna Award in 2015. President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Arjuna Award for the year-2015 to Kidambi Srikanth Nammalwar for Badminton, at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi on August 29, 2015.

India, Russia to Celebrate 2017 as Year to Mark 70-Years of Friendship, Ties

India and Russia will celebrate 2017 is a special year of completion of 70 years of diplomatic relations with several programs and events scheduled throut the year.

On 13 April 1947, four months before India’s independence, diplomatic relations were established by India with Russia, then USSR. Over the last seven decades, bilateral relations have seen strong and special Strategic Partnership.

Pankaj Saran, Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation, said, “2017 will be a joint celebration of a long and successful journey together, in which India and Russia have stood side by side with each other as true partners and friends. The Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre will be separately announcing details of individual events.”

During the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India in October 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin agreed to commemorate this important occasion and adopted a Roadmap for its celebrations, including series of events planned in Russia and in India during 2017.

The events include seminars, discussions, exhibitions, exchanges and many other activities and the Indian embassy in Russia has unveiled a special logo to mark the anniversary. India will also be the Guest Country at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum to held in June 2017.

India’s cultural program “Namaste Russia!” will be vrought to different cities of Russia to showcase the glimpses of India’s rich cultural heritage in the form of world famous musicians, artists and classical music and dance, said the embassy. It will host an ‘India Week’ in St. Petersburg in late May to bring the best of Indian culture, dance, yoga and cuisine.

The performances under Namaste Russia will include:

Sitar maestro Ustad Shujaat Hussain Khan;
The Shillong Chamber Choir;
The Sufi dance and music of the Nizami Brothers;

British MPs’ Delegation Meets PM Modi

An eight-member delegation of British Parliamentarians on Tuesday, Feb.14, 2017 called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said the relations between India and UK have strong bipartisan support in both countries, and hoped for enhanced interactions between the Parliamentarians of both countries.

The Prime Minister recalled his own visit to UK in November 2015, and the visit of Prime Minister Theresa May to India in November 2016. The year 2017 is being celebrated as the India-UK Year of Culture.

The Prime Minister also said that India and UK are natural partners in the global fight against terrorism, and urged the Parliamentarians to continue to raise their collective voice against terrorism, extremism and radicalization.

Last time in January 2015, the British MP Priti Patel attended the Bharatiya Pravasi Day celebration held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat when David Cameron was the British Prime Minister. Cameron government also honoured Mahatma Gandhi with a statue in London recently.

India Invited as Guest Nation at St. Petersburg Economic Forum 2017

India has been invited as a Guest Country in the St. Petersburg International Forum, Official Spokesperson said, confirmin the news on Wednesday in a briefing to the reporters.

“This is to confirm that India has been invited as a Guest Country at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) which will be held in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia from June 1 to 3, 2017,” said MEA spokesperson Mr. Vikas Swarup.

The invite comes following the current visit of Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor (NSA), who visited Moscow to discuss security and anti-terrorism issues with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov. Recent media reports have said that Iran, Russia and India trilateral security arrangement is on the cards.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the Forum as a Guest of Honour and other details of the visit are being worked out, and “we will announce them as and when they are finalized,” he said.

Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Russia attaches great importance to Modi’s visit.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) is an annual event held in St. Petersburg devoted to discuss global economic and business issues. It is also called the “Russian Davos,” and the first conference was held in 1997.

PM Welcomes UAE Crown Prince as Republic Day Chief Guest

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his welcoming address on the eve of the state visit of United arab Emirates Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said his participation as the Chief Guest in the Republic Day Celebrations on Thursday would herald new era in bilateral ties.

Recalling his visit in August 2015 to Dubai, Mr Modi said, “We have shaped an ambitious roadmap of engagement to make our comprehensive strategic partnership purposeful and action oriented. The agreement that was exchanged just now has institutionalized this understanding.”

He said UAE is one of India’s most valued partners and a close friend in an important region of the world. UAE has around 2.6 million Indians.

He welcomed UAE’s interest in investing in India’s infrastructure sector. “We are working to connect the institutional investors in UAE with our National Investment and Infrastructure Fund,” he noted.

“Security and defence cooperation have added growing new dimensions to our relationship. We have agreed to expand our useful cooperation in the field of defence to new areas including in the maritime domain. The MoU on Defence Cooperation, signed earlier today, will help steer our defence engagements in the right direction,” he said.

Raisina Dialogue 2017 Concludes

The second annual Raisina Dialogue was held in New Delhi, this time in January with distinguished foreign and Indian intellectuals and academics addressing the seesions. Envisioned to be India’s flagship conference of geopolitics and geo-economics, the conference was designed on the lines of Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

This year’s conference was jointly held by the Ministry of External Affairs, India and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), a think tank funded by the Ambani group in India. Held in New Delhi from 17-19 January, 2017 at the Taj Palace, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, the theme of the Dialogue, this year, was “The New Normal: Multilateralism with Multi-Polarity”.

The three-day dialogue featured an Inaugural Panel with the participation of M.J. Akbar, Minister of State for External Affairs of India, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Foreign Minister of Nepal, Hamid Karzai, former President of Afghanistan, Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia and Gowher Rizvi, International Affairs Advisor to Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

A video message from the United Nations Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres was also be played before the Inaugural Panel followed by several Ministerial and Keynote addresses.

Besides the Theme Address by Foreign Secretary Dr. S. Jaishankar, the foreign dignitaries who addressed the Dialogue included Boris Johnson, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, UK, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Minister for Regional Development, Sri Lanka, Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada, Jacques Audibert, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of France, Shunsuke Takei, Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr, Commander, Pacific Command and Admiral Michelle Howard, Commander, US Naval Forces, Europe and Africa.

While the first edition involved about 40 countries with 120 foreign participants, the 2nd edition featureed participation from about 65 countries and more than 250 foreign participants.
The name Raisina Dialogue comes from Raisina Hill, where the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the South and North Blocks of the Indian government’s head offices were located and the conference symbol has the design as its symbol.

The theme of the first dialogue was “Connecting Asia” which witnessed participation of more than 100 speakers from over 35 countries and the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj described the dialogue as a “new sense of purse to the country’s foreign policy”.

India to be in Top 3 Nations in Science by 2030: PM Modi

Addressing scientists in the holy city of Tirupati, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the rapid global rise of Cyber-Physical Systems has the potential to pose unprecedented challenges and the science community should be prepared to face it.

The 104th session of The Indian Science Congress was opened on Tuesday in the campus of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati on Tuesday focusing on theme “Science & Technology for National Development”.

The PM also paid tributes to eminent scientist Dr. M.G.K. Menon who died on November 2016. On new technologies, he said, “We equally need to keep an eye on the rise of disruptive technologies and be prepared to leverage them for growth.”

On the rapid global rise of Cyber-Physical Systems, he said it has the potential to pose unprecedented challenges and stresses to our demographic dividend but it should be turned into an opportunity by research, training and skilling in robotics, artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing, big data analysis, deep learning, quantum communication and Internet-of-Things.

“We need to develop an Inter-Ministerial National Mission in the Cyber-Physical Systems to secure our future by creation of basic R&D infrastructure, manpower and skills,” he added.

On ocean exploration, he said the Indian peninsula with over 1,300 islands, provides the nation a 7,500 kilometre coastline and 2.4 million square kilometres of Exclusive Economic Zone with huge opportunities in energy, food, medicine and a host of other natural resources, which may provide a significant dimension of a sustainable future.

He also noted that the Ministry of Earth Sciences is working to launch a Deep Ocean Mission to explore, understand and harness ocean resources.

“By 2030 India will be among the top three countries in science and technology and will be among the most attractive destinations for the best talent in the world. The wheels we set in motion today will achieve this goal,” he said and asked Indian institutions to involve foreign and NRI Ph.D. students in post-doctoral research in their projects.

He said the Ministry of Science & Technology is initiating a programme focused on students of classes 6 to 10 that will scout, mentor, reward and showcase 10 lakh top innovative ideas focused on local needs from 5 lakh schools.
