Jaishankar visits Singapore, highlights need for strategic partnership ahead of ISMR meeting

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a series of high-level meetings during his three-day visit to Singapore, aimed at bolstering bilateral ties between the two nations. Among the key figures he met were top leaders of Singapore, to whom he conveyed personal greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his discussions, Jaishankar underscored the importance of Singapore’s support for the strategic partnership between the two countries. He highlighted the positive sentiments expressed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong towards the India-Singapore relationship, which he described as a source of strength.

In addition to governmental meetings, Jaishankar interacted with leading corporate figures who shared insights into India’s growth story and their investment experiences in the country. These discussions aimed to further enhance economic cooperation between India and Singapore.

Among the officials Jaishankar met was Singapore’s Indian-origin Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, with whom he exchanged views on regional matters such as the Indo-Pacific and West Asia. They also reviewed the progress of bilateral cooperation and discussed preparations for the upcoming India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) meeting, which marks 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The ISMR, initiated by Prime Minister Modi, aims to deepen existing cooperation and explore new opportunities for collaboration. Its inaugural meeting was held in 2022, receiving appreciation from PM Modi for strengthening bilateral relations.

Jaishankar’s discussions extended to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, focusing on advancing bilateral ties, particularly in new-age technologies, and addressing the evolving global economic landscape.

Concluding his visit, Jaishankar met Home Affairs & Law Minister K Shanmugam, expressing appreciation for the consistent support received for the strategic partnership. His visit to Singapore is part of a broader regional engagement strategy, with subsequent stops planned in Malaysia and The Philippines to discuss mutual concerns and regional issues.

UN Security Council passes resolution on Gaza ceasefire, US abstains; Israel upset

The Security Council, after more than five months of conflict, issued a historic demand for an immediate ceasefire on Monday, marking a significant shift in approach. The United States, typically an ally of Israel, abstained from the vote, allowing the resolution to pass with unusual unanimity among the other 14 members.

Notably, the latest resolution does not directly tie the ceasefire to ongoing negotiations led by Qatar, the US, and Egypt, which aim to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Israel has criticized previous resolutions for failing to condemn Hamas explicitly.

This shift in diplomatic efforts reflects the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis and prevent further escalation of violence in the region.

This resolution, supported by diverse nations including Algeria, Slovenia, and Switzerland, emphasizes the need for a ceasefire during the ongoing Islamic holy month of Ramadan. It calls for a truce to pave the way for a lasting peace and urges the release of hostages seized by Hamas and other militants on October 7.

However, Russia objected to the removal of the term “permanent” ceasefire, leading to a failed vote on that amendment. This development underscores the complex dynamics within the Security Council.

The United States’ evolving stance was evident in its recent proposal for an “immediate and sustained ceasefire,” indicating growing frustration with Israel’s military actions. Previous attempts by the US to broker a ceasefire were blocked, highlighting the delicate balance between supporting Israel and addressing concerns about civilian casualties.

No permission to AAP protest, says Delhi Police; Security beefed up at PM residence

Delhi Police said on Tuesday that it has not given permission to AAP to hold any protest, reports ANI. However, entry/exit at Lok Kalyan Marg Metro station, Gate no 3 of Patel Chowk Metro Station, and Gate no 5 of Central Secretariat Metro Station will remain closed.

Security at the Prime Minister’s residence has been beefed up by the Delhi Police following the AAP’s announcement of a protest on Tuesday to “gherao” the premises in response to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest.

“Due to security reasons, entry/exit at Lok Kalyan Marg Metro station, Gate no 3 of Patel Chowk Metro Station and Gate no 5 of Central Secretariat Metro station will remain closed till further notice,” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a post on X.

“Large number of security personnel, including paramilitary forces, were seen deployed at Patel Chowk after a call was given by AAP to gather here before the march,” said a senior Delhi Police official.

The Delhi Traffic Police have advised commuters to avoid routes, including Kemal Ataturk Marg, Safdarjung Road, Akbar Road and Teen Murti Marg.

“Commuters are requested to cooperate by avoiding/bypassing these roads, if possible, and make maximum use of public transport,” said the official. “People, who are going towards ISBT/Railway Stations/Indira Gandhi Airport, are advised to carefully plan their travel with sufficient time at hand,” he added.

“General public and motorists are advised to keep patience, observe traffic rules and road discipline and follow directions of traffic personnel deployed at all intersections,” the official said.

Ujjain Mahakal Temple witnesses fire during ‘Bhasma Aarti’ time, 14 priests injured

A blaze erupted within the inner sanctum of Ujjain’s revered Mahakal Temple on Monday morning, leaving 13 priests wounded during the traditional ‘bhasma aarti’ ceremony. Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh confirmed the incident, stating that a thorough investigation has been initiated.

“Thirteen priests sustained burn injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at the district hospital here. A magisterial probe has been launched,” Singh informed ANI.

Witnesses recounted that colored ‘gulal’ was being dispersed within the sanctum as part of the Holi festivities when an individual inadvertently cast it onto an earthen lamp, believed to have ignited the flames due to potentially reactive chemicals within the ‘gulal.’

Among the injured is Sanjay Guru, the chief priest overseeing the ‘bhasma aarti.’ Presently, nine individuals are reported to be in critical condition and have been transferred to Indore for specialized care.

Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma conveyed insights from an injured party, suggesting that ‘gulal’ had been mistakenly tossed onto priest Sanjeev, precipitating the fire upon contact with the lamp.

Mahakal temple corridor

In May 2023, the Mahakal Lok Temple corridor, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2022, witnessed six out of the seven Saptrishi statues displaced and two of them severely damaged after a massive thunderstorm. on May 29, 2023.

Usually, no minister or political leader prefers to stay in Ujjain as the popular belief is that Mahakal or Lord Shiva is known to be the ruler of Ujjain, hence, no other ruler can spend the night here.

Managing diabetes key to prevent dementia: Study

An Indian-origin scientist has found that reducing the risk of dementia in Alzheimer’s is possible by keeping diabetes under control.

Narendra Kumar, an associate professor at Texas A&M University in the US, spearheaded a study featured in the ‘American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’ journal, uncovering a robust connection between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Implementing preventative or mitigative measures for diabetes could potentially stall or mitigate the advancement of dementia symptoms in Alzheimer’s,” he emphasized.

Diabetes and Alzheimer’s represent two burgeoning health challenges worldwide. Diabetes disrupts the body’s energy conversion from food and affects approximately one in ten US adults. Meanwhile, Alzheimer’s ranks among the top ten leading causes of death in the US, as highlighted in the research.

The team delved into how dietary patterns might influence Alzheimer’s progression in individuals with diabetes.

Their investigation unveiled that a high-fat diet diminishes the expression of Jak3, a specific protein in the gut. Mice lacking this protein showcased a cascade of inflammation from the intestines to the liver and brain. Consequently, these mice exhibited Alzheimer’s-like manifestations in the brain alongside cognitive decline.

The researchers propose that the route from the gut to the brain involves the liver. “As the primary metabolizer of our dietary intake, we hypothesize that the pathway from gut to brain involves the liver,” explained Kumar.

Their long-standing exploration of Jak3’s functions revealed that alterations in its expression due to dietary factors can lead to intestinal permeability, resulting in chronic inflammation, diabetes, diminished brain capacity to eliminate toxins, and dementia-like symptoms akin to Alzheimer’s disease.

India and Bhutan: Modi Opens ₹140-Cr Hospital in Thimphu; Joint Statement Issued on PM’s State Visit

Before winding up his trip to Bhutan, PM Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay inaugurated a Rs.140 crore hospital built with Indian assistance.

Modi also announced that India will double its assistance for the neighbouring country’s five-year plan from ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore in the backdrop of concerted efforts by China to settle a border dispute and establish diplomatic ties with Bhutan.

The Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital, a state-of-the-art health facility was supported in two phases. The first phase was built at a cost of ₹22 crore and has been operational since 2019. The construction of the second phase, with a cost of ₹119 crore, began in 2019 as part of Bhutan’s 12th five-year plan and was completed recently.

The hospital will add value to the quality of mother and child health services in Bhutan, the external affairs ministry said in a statement. It has state-of-the-art facilities for pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, anesthesiology, operation theatre, neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care.

“Inaugurated the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital, which stands as a beacon of hope for several families, offering quality healthcare. This facility embodies a commitment to nurturing a healthy future generation,” Modi said in a post on Twitter (X).

While concluding the trip, Modi was seen off at the airport by Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Tobgay, as a special gesture. “I am honoured by the special gesture by His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, of coming to the airport as I leave for Delhi. This has been a very special Bhutan visit,” Modi said in another post on X.

Modi said his talks with the king, Tobgay and other leaders of Bhutan “will add even more vigour to the India-Bhutan friendship”. He added, “India will always be a reliable friend and partner for Bhutan.”

India summons German diplomat over remarks on Delhi CM Kejriwal’s arrest

India on Saturday summoned a senior diplomat from the German Embassy and lodged a strong protest over comments on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Later, the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy, George Enzweiler, was seen leaving the Ministry of External Affairs office in the capital.

India called the comments “blatant interference” in India’s internal matters after the German foreign office said on Friday that it has “taken note” of Kejriwal’s arrest and expects that “standards regarding the independence of the judiciary and basic democratic principles” will apply.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “We see such remarks as interfering in our judicial process and undermining the independence of our judiciary. India is a vibrant and robust democrary with rule of law. As in all legal cases in the country, and elsewhere in the democratic world, law will take its own course in the instant matter. Biased assumptions made on this account are most unwarranted.”

In response to how the German government assessed Kejriwal’s arrest weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, Sebastian Fischer, a spokesperson for Germany’s foreign ministry, said, “We have taken note of the case. India is a democratic country. We assume and expect that the standards relating to the independence of the judiciary and fundamental democratic principles will also apply in this case.”

“Like anyone facing accusations, Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and impartial trial, this includes he can make use of all available legal avenues without restrictions. The presumption of innocence is a central element of the rule of law and must apply to him [sic],” the statement said.

The Enforcement Directorate termed the Aam Aadmi Party chief the kingpin of the alleged excise scam in collusion with other ministers of the Delhi government. It claimed that Kejriwal was involved in the conspiracy of formulation of the Excise Policy 2021-22 to favour certain persons.

A special court on Friday sent Kejriwal to six days of ED custody, till March 28.

Meghan, Harry’s first reaction to Kate Middleton’s cancer news: Will it end royal feud?

Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, wished “health and healing” for Kate Middleton, after the news of her cancer came out. In a brief statement, the estranged British royal couple hoped Kate and her family were able to heal “privately in peace”.

“We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they can do so privately and in peace”. The use of two words — health and healing for Kate and the family has led analysts to hope for a family reunion soon.

Kate or Catherine, 42, revealed on Friday she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing the “early stages” of treatment. She also described her diagnosis as a “huge shock” in a video released on social media.

Two months ago, Kate had refrained from the public appearance for a surgery for a non-cancerous abdominal condition but later tests revealed cancer was present.

While the details are not available, the wife of Prince William, future heir to the British throne, said she is “well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.”

Who’s Sarath Chandra Reddy? Liquor scam approver who paid crores in EBs

Hyderabad-based businessman Sarath Chandra Reddy, the man whose revelations led to the arrest of BRS MLC K. Kavitha and Delhi CM Aravind Kejriwal over the past week, also paid Rs 55 crore to the Bharatiya Janata Party through electoral bonds, the data released on March 21 reflected.

Sarath Chandra Reddy won licences for five liquor retail zones under the excise policy that was implemented in Delhi from November 2021 to July 2022. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on November 11, 2022 and four days later, Aurobindo Pharma, in which he is a director, paid Rs 5 crore to the BJP through electoral bonds, reports said.

After his bail in May 2023, Reddy turned approver and his firm paid another Rs 25 crore to the BJP through bonds on November 8, 2023. Also, two other companies connected to Aurobindo Pharma — Eugia Pharma Specialities Ltd and APL Healthcare Ltd are wholly-owned subsidiaries of Aurobindo Pharma — donated Rs 25 crore to the BJP.

The Enforcement Directorate has alleged that the “South Group”, which includes Reddy and others from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, gave Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders, which it said was used by the party in 2022 Goa Assembly elections. ED further said that the loss to the Delhi government under this excise policy amounts to Rs 2,873 crore in revenues.

In Andhra Pradesh, Aurobindo Pharma donated to the Telugu Desam Party and In Telangana to BRS, according to the data available on Electoral Bonds.

60 Killed, 100 Injured in Moscow Terror Attack on Mall, India Condemns

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended solidarity with Russia and condemned the terrorist attack that claimed over 60 lives and injured several others. “We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack in Moscow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. India stands in solidarity with the government and the people of the Russian Federation in this hour of grief,” PM Modi stated in a post on social media.

The attack unfolded at a concert hall in Moscow on Friday, where terrorists opened fire on the crowd, resulting in more than 60 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The assailants also set fire to the venue in a brazen act of violence.

ISIS has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack which saw the gunmen storming the Crocus City Hall in Moscow at around 8 p.m. (local time) at a concert of rock band Piknik that was about to begin.

The attackers, who had not attempted to take hostages or make any statements but shot people indiscriminately, have barricaded themselves inside the burning building. The toll is expected to go up, the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) was quoted by the media as saying.

The United States said it had warned earlier in March about a possible terrorist attack targeting “large gatherings” in Moscow, the White House said Friday, hours after the attack. “Earlier this month, the US government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts” and Washington “shared this information with Russian authorities,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said.

Watson said the administration of US President Joe Biden was complying with a long-standing “duty to warn” policy, in which the United States alerts nations or groups when it receives intelligence of specific threats to kidnap or kill multiple victims.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “The Russian Foreign Ministry is receiving phone calls with condolences from ordinary citizens from all around the globe following the horrible tragedy at the Krokus City Hall venue in Moscow. They are expressing the strongest condemnation of this bloody terrorist attack, transpiring right before the eyes of the entire world.”

Supreme Court issues stay on Govt’s Fact-Checking Unit

On Thursday, the Supreme Court issued a stay on the Union’s notification regarding the establishment of the Fact-Check Unit (FCU) in accordance with the IT Amendment Rules 2023. This stay will remain in effect until the Bombay High Court reaches a final decision on the challenges to the IT Rules amendment of 2023. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had recently designated the Press Information Bureau as the FCU.

The Supreme Court’s decision to issue the stay was made without expressing a definitive opinion on the merits of the ongoing challenge to the Rules before the Bombay High Court. However, the Court found prima facie grounds to stay the March 20 notification, which would have made the contested Rules operational. Additionally, the Supreme Court overturned the Bombay High Court’s March 11 order, which had denied a stay on the implementation of the Rules and subsequently allowed the Centre to notify the FCU. The Court noted that the challenge to the rules presents “serious constitutional questions” and emphasized the need for analysis by the High Court regarding the impact of the amended Rule 3(1)(b)(v) on the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression.

The bench, consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, heard Special Leave Petitions filed by Kunal Kamra, Editors Guild of India, and the Association of Indian Magazines, challenging the Bombay High Court’s refusal to stay the implementation of the IT Rules 2023. During the proceedings, Senior Advocate Darius Khambata, representing comedian Kunal Kamra, presented several arguments: firstly, that having an FCU exclusively for the Union Government is arbitrary; secondly, that the FCU could lead to the dissemination of only the Government’s perspective; and thirdly, that with elections approaching, the FCU could be exploited as a means for the Union to control the flow of information to voters.

“Why is the FCU only for the Central Govt? Why isn’t there an independent body for everyone, rather than just for the Central Govt.? If the objective is to combat fake news, then everyone is impacted by it.”

Delhi CM, AAP Chief Kejriwal Arrested by ED, 6 days after Kavitha’s arrest

Exactly six days after the dramatic arrest of Telangana MLC and former state Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha, the Enforcement Directorate raided the Delhi CM’s residence, seized his phone and also of his family members before starting a two-hour questioning in the Liquor scam that was being probed by the agency.

Kavitha was arrested by ED from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad on March 15. Today’s arrest of Kejriwal has sent several Aam Aadmi Party members to protest against his arrest at the residence of Delhi Chief Minister.

Earlier today, the Delhi High Court rejected Kejriwal’s plea for interim bail after ED repeated the summons for the 9th time. The next hearing was scheduled for April 22.

AAP leader Atishi, who reached the spot, says, “We have received news that ED has arrested Arvind Kejriwal… We have always said that Arvind Kejriwal will run the govt from jail. He will remain the CM of Delhi.”

Here is a timeline of the Delhi liquor case:

  • November 2021: Delhi Govt implements new excise policy
  • July 8, 2022: Delhi Chief Secretary points out gross violations in policy
  • July 22, 2022: Delhi Lt. Governor asks CBI to probe

Meet New James Bond – ‘Bullet Train’ Fame Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nod Awaited

The quest for the next leading man in the famed spy franchise has reached its conclusion. British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has reportedly received a formal offer to step into the shoes of the iconic secret agent synonymous with martinis and intrigue, as per sources cited by The Sun. At 33, Taylor-Johnson stands on the brink of accepting this career-defining role, although no official confirmation has been made yet.

Should Taylor-Johnson accept the offer, he would become the seventh actor to embody this legendary British character since its inception in 1962. Despite a public desire for Idris Elba, who, at 51, is considered slightly aged for the role, Elba has stated he’s not pursuing the opportunity.

Famous for his roles in “Bullet Train,” “Nocturnal Animals,” “Kick-Ass,” “Nowhere Boy,” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Taylor-Johnson seems to have clinched the sought-after part, according to The Sun. While negotiations are underway, Taylor-Johnson is expected to finalize the deal imminently, reported The Sun.

EON Productions, the studio behind the 007 series, is purportedly gearing up for production to commence later this year. “If Aaron chooses to accept, Bond is his,” an insider revealed to The Sun. “The offer is on the table, awaiting his response.”

If Aaron agrees, he will succeed Daniel Craig, who portrayed Bond across five films over 15 years, with his final appearance in 2021’s “No Time To Die.” Taylor-Johnson reportedly underwent a screen test for the Bond role in 2022. Addressing speculation last week, he remarked, “I’m flattered by the suggestion. It’s a tremendous honor.”

Taylor-Johnson’s career began to ascend with his role in the beloved British comedy “Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging” in 2008. Notably, he portrayed a youthful John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy” in 2009, where he crossed paths with his future wife, director Sam Taylor-Wood.

The actor’s personal life has garnered considerable attention, chiefly due to the notable age difference between him and his spouse. He wed Sam Taylor-Johnson, 57, in June 2012. The couple shares two daughters, Wylda Rae, 13, and Romy Hero, 11. Taylor-Johnson, who directed “Fifty Shades of Grey,” also has two older daughters, Angelica, 26, and Jessie, 17, from his wife’s previous marriage.

Their relationship’s origins trace back to their collaboration on “Nowhere Boy” in 2009, when Aaron was 18 and Sam was 42. They welcomed their first child, Wylda, the following year.

FBI’s 2023 Internet Crime Report Reveals Alaskans Suffered Losses Exceeding $31 Million

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) unveiled its 2023 Internet Crime Report along with detailed state breakdowns, showing a concerning trend in cybercrime affecting Alaskans. With over 880,000 complaints nationwide, totaling potential losses of $12.5 billion, the report underscores the growing threat of online scams and fraud.

Alaska’s portion of the report reveals a staggering figure: residents filed more than 2,300 complaints with losses surpassing $31 million, marking a significant spike of nearly $15 million compared to the previous year. The impact spanned across all age groups, with the state’s senior population bearing the brunt of reported losses.

Among the myriad of internet crimes reported, three schemes stood out as particularly costly for Alaskans:

  1. Business Email Compromise (BEC): This sophisticated scam targets businesses and individuals involved in wire transfer payments. By compromising email accounts and other communication channels, fraudsters manipulate victims into unauthorized fund transfers, resulting in losses totaling $12.2 million.
  2. Investment Fraud: Deceptive practices lure investors with false promises of high returns and low risk. Victims, often targeted in retirement or 401K schemes, reported losses amounting to $6.6 million.
  3. Confidence/Romance Fraud: Perpetrated through social media or dating platforms, victims are duped into believing they’re in a genuine relationship, only to be swindled out of money or personal information. This scheme accounted for losses of $2.8 million.

The report serves not only as a testament to the prevalence of internet crimes but also as a resource for prevention and protection. The FBI urges victims to report suspected internet crimes to IC3 at www.ic3.gov, the primary platform for reporting cybercrimes nationwide.

IC3’s mission is twofold: to provide a reliable reporting mechanism for internet crimes and to forge effective partnerships with law enforcement and industry stakeholders to combat cyber threats. Information gathered through reports aids in both investigative efforts and public awareness campaigns.

For those seeking further information or assistance, resources such as IC3 Annual Reports and FBI’s Scams and Safety guidelines offer invaluable insights into recognizing and thwarting common cyber threats.

NY Consulate of India rules out foul play in AP student’s death; Toll reaches 9 in 2024

The Indian Consulate in New York said on Monday that preliminary investigation into the death of an Indian student, reportedly discovered deceased in a forest in the US state of Massachusetts last week, has ruled out any foul play.

Abhijeeth Paruchuru, hailing from Andhra Pradesh and a student of Boston University, was found inside an abandoned car by local law enforcement, as per reports from local media.

Expressing deep sorrow over Paruchuru’s “unfortunate demise,” the Consulate conveyed on X: “Mr. Paruchuru’s parents, residing in Connecticut, are in direct contact with investigators. Initial inquiries indicate no evidence of foul play.”

The Consulate facilitated the necessary documentation and repatriation of Paruchuru’s remains to India. “We are maintaining communication with local authorities and the Indian-American community regarding this matter,” the Consulate added.

Beginning this year, a series of mysterious deaths have raised concerns about the security and safety of Indian students in the US, with the latest incident bringing the toll to nine.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that its consulates in the US have reached out to Indian students, assuring them of all possible assistance in case of any difficulties.

“We have engaged with our students there, providing guidance and urging them to promptly contact either the embassy or the consulates in case of any issues or emergencies so that we can provide them with better assistance,” commented External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal.

The White House emphasized in February that there is no justification for violence based on race or gender, affirming that the US is diligently working to prevent and disrupt attacks on Indians and Indian-origin students. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated that the welfare of Indian students abroad remains a top priority for the government.

India responds to China on Arunachal: “Repetitive baseless arguments”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday lashed out at China for “advancing absurd claims” over the territory of Arunachal Pradesh and strongly reiterated that the northeastern state will remain an “integral and inalienable part” of India forever.

The Ministry’s response followed Beijing’s statement that it “never acknowledges and firmly opposes” the “so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”

In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal remarked on the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry, dismissing them as “absurd claims” regarding the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh.

Jaiswal reiterated that such baseless arguments hold no validity, emphasizing that Arunachal Pradesh has always been and will remain an integral and inalienable part of India. He affirmed that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will continue to benefit from India’s development programs and infrastructure projects.

Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry, asserted that the southern part of Xizang, the Chinese name for Tibet, is an inherent part of its territory. This statement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh to inaugurate the strategically significant Sela tunnel, situated at an altitude of 13,000 feet, which will ensure all-weather connectivity to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

Zhang criticized India’s actions, stating that they contradict efforts made by both sides to ease border tensions and are not conducive to maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin expressed strong disapproval of PM Modi’s visit, stating that it would only complicate the boundary issue. In response, Jaiswal rejected Wenbin’s remarks, asserting that India has consistently communicated its position on Arunachal Pradesh to the Chinese side on numerous occasions.

The Nifty hit a new low, marking its lowest point in over a month, as it closed down by 1.08 percent or 238.3 points at 21,817.5 on Tuesday.

Trading volumes in the NSE cash market were modest at Rs. 0.83 lakh crore. Despite the negative advance-decline ratio at 0.36:1, the midcap index experienced a sharper decline compared to the Nifty.

In Asia, stock performance was mixed on Tuesday following the Bank of Japan’s decision to raise its benchmark interest rate for the first time in 17 years, signaling the end of its long-standing negative rate policy. This move by the Bank of Japan marks the termination of the world’s final negative interest rate policy in the country.

Analysts pointed out a breach of the Nifty’s support level at 21,745 could potentially intensify the downward trend, while resistance might be encountered around 21,905. The next significant support levels to monitor are around 21,500 within the next week. Any upward movement towards 22,000 could present a selling opportunity, they advise.

After a long period of consolidation, the Nifty experienced a significant downward breakout on Tuesday, closing lower by 238 points. From the opening bell, the market displayed weakness throughout the session on Tuesday. It may further decline shortly, analysts said.

China raises again its claim over Arunachal Pradesh

Despite India’s stand, Chinese Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry, reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is their territory, aimed at keeping the issue burning as ever.

Zhang’s comments came in response to India’s recent reinforcement of military infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh, specifically through the construction of the Sela Tunnel, aimed at improving connectivity and troop movement in the strategically significant area.

China consistently maintained that Indian leaders’ visits to Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as South Tibet,  undermine its territorial claims. However, India firmly rejected China’s assertions, maintaining Arunachal Pradesh’s integral status within the nation and disregarding China’s attempts to rename the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh, where he inaugurated the Sela Tunnel, drew criticism from China. Zhang criticized Modi’s visit, stating that it hinders efforts to ease border tensions and disrupts peace in the region. He urged India to refrain from actions complicating the border issue and emphasized China’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China’s response followed a diplomatic protest lodged earlier against India by the Chinese Foreign Ministry over Modi’s visit.

India, in turn, firmly rejected China’s objection, reaffirming Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India’s stance, emphasizing that objections to Indian leaders’ visits or developmental projects in Arunachal Pradesh lack rationale and do not change the factual status of the state.

Electoral Bonds: SC asks SBI to declare all details by Thursday, March 21

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued directives to the State Bank of India (SBI) to disclose comprehensive details concerning electoral bonds. These details include the date of purchase and redemption, the names of purchasers and recipients, denominations, and alphanumeric numbers and serial bonds.

Furthermore, the court instructed SBI Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara to submit an affidavit by 5 pm on Thursday, confirming the disclosure of all pertinent details in the bank’s possession and affirming that no information has been withheld.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized the necessity for SBI to provide all available details, including alphanumeric and serial numbers of purchased bonds, to prevent potential future controversies. The court underscored the importance of transparency by mandating the filing of an affidavit to confirm the disclosure and absence of withheld information.

Additionally, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition by the ‘Citizens Rights Trust’ seeking to pre-date the disclosure of bond details. Instead, the court directed SBI to disclose information from April 12, 2019, to Feb 15, 2024. The plea alleged the sale of 9,159 bonds worth ₹4,000 crores during this period.

The court declined pleas by industry bodies like Ficci and Assocham to defer the disclosure of bond numbers, asserting that anonymity cannot supersede the requirement for information disclosure.

During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised concerns about misinformation on social media regarding the court’s electoral bond judgment. He highlighted deliberate misrepresentation by petitioners in press interviews and emphasized a hidden agenda behind such actions. In response, the court reiterated its readiness to handle social media commentary, asserting its commitment to the rule of law and transparency.

In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court instructed the Election Commission to return sealed covers containing electoral bond information. The court directed the digitization of this data by 5 pm on Saturday and its subsequent public release in accordance with the court’s directives.

Rahul Gandhi denies ‘Shakti’ he referred to was ‘Shakti Mata’; Offers elaborate explanation

Amid attacks over his ‘Shakti’ remarks, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that the statement had been taken out of context and blamed the “lies-manufacturing machinery” of the BJP for creating a needless controversy over his statement.

While addressing a large gathering on the culmination of the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Mumbai on Sunday, Rahul Gandhi said, “There is a word ‘shakti’ (might) in Hindi. We are fighting against the ‘shakti’ (might of the state). The question is, what is that ‘shakti’ and what does it entail for us?”

He took potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the latter twists his remarks if he doesn’t like them but the fact is that he spoke the plain truth though it left the ruling party offended and the BJP, which has “begun a smear campaign” against him.

Taking to X, Rahul Gandhi posted an explanation of what he meant by taking on the ‘shakti’, which the BJP equated with the revered and venerated figure in Hinduism. “The ‘shakti’ which we are fighting is deeply enmeshed in system, the PM is just a mask of it,” he wrote on X.

“It is the ‘shakti (might)’ that has destroyed constitutional bodies like the Election Commission, made agencies like the CBI, ED a puppet and taken the whole constitutional set-up for a ride,” MP Rahul Gandhi explained.

“It’s because of this ‘shakti’ that poor and marginalised farmers are being driven to more pitiable situations, while big corporates are getting bank waivers of hundreds to thousands of crores,” he explained.

He further said that the media had stopped reporting facts and was saluting this ‘shakti.’ He made it clear that his assertions and fight against this ‘undeclared power’ is not about any religion but it is against corruption and fake narratives.
