President of India addresses members of Karnataka Legislature on 60th anniversary of VidhanaSoudha

The President of India, Shri Ram NathKovind, graced the ‘Vajramahothsava’ – Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on completion of 60 years of VidhanaSoudha, and addressed the members of both Houses of the Karnataka Legislature at Bengaluru, today (October 25, 2017).

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that it is not just the 60th birthday of this building (VidhanaSoudha) that we are marking. This is also the diamond jubilee of the debates and discussions in the two Houses, of legislations that have been passed and policies that have been shaped for the betterment of the lives of the people of Karnataka. Both Houses of the Legislature jointly and collectively represent the will and aspirations of the people of Karnataka. Not just that, the two Houses also represent the ideals and optimism and the energy and dynamism of the Kannadiga people. This building is a monument to the history of public service in Karnataka. A galaxy of political stalwarts has participated in the proceedings of the two Houses that meet here. They have spoken in many memorable debates.

The President said that Karnataka’s dreams are not for Karnataka alone; they are dreams for all of India. Karnataka is an engine of the Indian economy. It is a mini-India that draws – without losing its cultural and linguistic distinctiveness – youth from all over the country. They come here for knowledge and for jobs, and they give their labour and intellect. Everybody gains.

The President said that legislators are both public servants as well as nation builders. Indeed, anybody who performs his or her duties with honesty and dedication is a nation builder. Those who maintain this building are nation builders. Those who provide it security are nation builders. It is by the efforts of ordinary citizens, who diligently carry out everyday tasks, that nations are built. As legislators sit and work in this VidhanSoudha, he was confident they will never forget this and will continue to draw inspiration from it.

The President said that we are aware of the three D’s of the legislature,that it is a place to debate, dissent and finally decide. And if we add the fourth D, decency, then the fifth D, namely democracy, becomes a reality. The legislature is an embodiment of the will, aspirations and hopes of the people of Karnataka, irrespective of political belief, caste and religion, gender or language. It needs the collective wisdom of both Houses of the Legislature to fulfil the dreams of our people.

The President said that it is for the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council to function as sacred temples of democracy, and contribute to raising the level of political and policy discourse. As representatives of the people of Karnataka, the members of the two Houses here have a special responsibility. He called upon legislators to make the diamond jubilee not just the celebration of a proud past – but a commitment to an even greater future.

President’s greetings on the eve of Teachers’ Day

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind has greeted teachers across the country on the eve of Teachers’ Day.
In a message, the President has said, “The birth anniversary of former President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher and an illustrious teacher, on 5th September, is celebrated every year as Teachers’ Day.

Our nation has a warm tradition of the Guru Shishya parampara by which teachers impart their knowledge to students and empower them. It is our moral responsibility to pay respect and regard to teachers, as they are role models who guide children to become good and productive human beings. Teachers also develop the creativity of children and kindle a desire in them to be innovative.

On this occasion, I pay my homage to Dr. Radhakrishnan and extend my heartiest greetings to all teachers of our great nation”.

President of India to visit Andhra Pradesh on September 1 to 2, 2017

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind will visit Andhra Pradesh on September 1 and 2, 2017.

On September 1, 2017, the President will inaugurate the new hospital building of the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) – Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women. On the same day, he will also attend a civic reception and public meeting at Sri Venkateswara Arts College Ground, Tirupati.

On September 2, 2017, the President will have a darshan of Sri Varaha Swamy Varu, Tirumala, before returning to Delhi.

President Kovind to address nation on Aug 15 eve of Independence Day 2017

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind will address the nation tomorrow (August 14, 2017) on the eve of the 71st Independence Day.

The address will be broadcast from 1900 hrs. on the entire national network of All India Radio (AIR) and telecast over all channels of Doordarshan in Hindi followed by the English version. Broadcast of the address in Hindi and English on Doordarshan will be followed by broadcast in regional languages by regional channels of Doordarshan. AIR will broadcast regional language versions from 2000 hrs. onwards on its respective regional networks.

President Mukherjee Remembers Life as MP at Farewell, Thanks Modi

The President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee was given a grand farewell at Central Hall of the Parliament on Sunday, July 23, 2017, where he remebred fondly his 37 years as a member of parliament before taking up the office of President.

The President said that as he retired from the Office of the President of the Republic, his association with the Parliament also comes to an end. He will no longer be a part of the Parliament of India. He stated he was leaving with a sense of fulfilment and happiness of having served the people of this great country through this institution- as their humble servant.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that for 37 years he served as a Member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Listening to the stalwarts for hours and days in Parliament sitting in the Treasury or Opposition Benches, he felt one with the soul of this living institution. He understood the real value of debate, discussion and dissent.

He realized how disruption hurts the opposition more than the government as it denies them the opportunity to raise the concerns of the people. It was unfortunate that the parliamentary time devoted to legislation has been declining. With the heightened complexity of administration, legislation must be preceded by scrutiny and adequate discussion.

Scrutiny in committees is no substitute to open discussion on the floor of the House. When the Parliament fails to discharge its law-making role or enacts laws without discussion, it breaches the trust reposed in it by the people of this great country. He stated that the recent passage of Goods and Services Tax and its launch on 1st July is a shining example of co-operative federalism and speaks volumes for the maturity of Indian Parliament.

The President said that it was in July 2012 that his membership in Lok Sabha came to an end when he was declared as the 13th President of the Republic. Even though thirty-seven years of his life in Parliament came to an end on that day but he still continued to have a tenacious link with this institution, in fact he became an integral part of it, as President of Republic, as per the Constitution.

In these five years, his principal responsibility was to function as the guardian of the Constitution. As he had said on oath, he strived to preserve, protect and defend our Constitution, not just in word but also in spirit. In this task, he said he was greatly benefitted from the advice and co-operation extended by Prime Minister Modi at every step.

With passion and energy, he is driving transformational changes in the country. He would carry with him fond memories of their association and his warm and courteous behaviour, said the President.

Mr Ram Nath Kovind will take over as the next President of India on Monday.

Sushma Swaraj Calls US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

India’s External Affairs Minister Mrs. Sushma Swaraj and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had a customary telephone conversation on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.

Both of them resolved to work together closely to further expand and deepen the multi-faceted strategic partnership between India and the US. They emphasized that close and strong relations between India and the US were not only in mutual interest but also had regional and global significance. In this context, they agreed to intensify cooperation in various sectors, including defence and security, energy, and economy.

They also agreed to follow-up the firm resolve expressed by Prime Minister Modi and President Trump to cooperate closely in the global fight against terrorism.
