Vice President condemns terror attack in Barcelona

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has condemned the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain. In a message, he said that there can be no justification for such barbaric and reprehensible acts and terrorism is the biggest menace humanity is facing today. International terrorism can only be defeated by coordinated global efforts, he added.

Following is the text of Vice President’s message:

“I am deeply shocked by the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and injured.

There can be no justification for such barbaric and reprehensible acts. Terrorism is the biggest menace humanity is facing today with all pluralist and open societies increasingly encountering new levels of threat.

International terrorism can only be defeated by coordinated global efforts. We stand with the people and Government of Spain and commend their swift action in dealing with the attackers. I join the nation in praying for the bereaved families and early recovery of the injured.”

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu Greets People on the Eve of Navroz

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of ‘Navroz’ the Parsi New Year. In a message, he said that Navroz symbolizes the spirit of fraternity, compassion and respect for all. The Parsi community has made an invaluable contribution to nation-building in various fields, he added.

The Vice President of India, M. Hamid Ansari congratulated the Vice President-elect, on his election as the next Vice President of India.In a telephonic conversation after the results were declared, Mr Ansari wished Venkaiah Naidu the very best for his future role as the Vice President of India and the Chairman, Rajya Sabha.

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, 67, was elected India’s Vice President on Friday with a huge majority.A BJP leader for decades, Naidu served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Urban Development and Information and Broadcasting in the Modi Cabinet.

He was the national president of BJP from 2002 to 2004 and also served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Naidu was born on 1 July 1949 at Chavatapalem, in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh and completed schooling from V. R. High School, Nellore, and pursued his bachelor’s degree in politics and diplomatic studies from V. R. College.

Later, he acquired a bachelor’s degree in law with specialisation in international law from Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam.

He was an RSS swayamsevak and joined ABVP during his college days and got elected as the president of the students union of colleges affiliated to the Andhra University. His political career began during the Jai Andhra Movement of 1972. In 1974, he became the convener of the anti-corruption Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti of Andhra Pradesh and staged protests against the emergency and was imprisoned.

 

New Index on City Liveability Launched, 116 Cities Under Radar

The Indian Ministry of Urban Development on Friday, June 23, 2017, launched the ‘City Liveability Index’ for measuring the quality of life in 116 major cities including smart cities, capital cities and cities with a population of above one million each.

The Index, a Common Minimum Reference Framework enables the cities realise their standing on qualities such as quality of life and the interventions needed, said Minister of Urban Development M.Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi at a National Workshop on Urban Transformation.

“Time has now come to measure life quality in cities and rank them accordingly,” said Mr Venkaiah Naidu.

The first of its kind, the City Liveability Index will assess cities on 79 paratmeters to measure the extent and quality of infrastructure including availability of roads, education and health care, mobility, employment opportunities, emergency response, grievance redressal, pollution, availability of open and green spaces, cultural and entertainment opportunities etc.

After selecting the agency for undertaking this assessment next month, data collection will be completed in the next about six months, informed the minister.

The Ministry of Urban Development also disbursed Rs.500 crore as incentive to 16 States that performed well in implementing urban reforms during 2016-17 such as e-governance, Audit of accounts, Tax revision policies and extent of tax revenue collection, Energy and Water Audit, Establishing State Level Financial Intermediaries for resource mobilization, Credit Rating etc., were also taken into account.

Venkaiah Naidu’s home state Andhra Pradesh topped the list scoring 96.06% marks, followed by Odisha (95.38%), Jharkhand (91.98%), Chattisgarh (91.37%), Madhya Pradesh (90.20%), Telangana (86.92%), Rajasthan (84.62%), Punjab (77.02%), Kerala (75.73%), Goa (75.38*), Mizoram (75.00%), Gujarat (73.80%), Chandigarh (72.73%), Uttar Pradesh (70.67%) and Maharashtra (70.52).

Shops, Hotels to Remain Open 24/7 Soon: Minister Venkaiah Naidu

Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu said the Union Cabinet has approved the Model Shops and Establishment Act, facilitating round-the-clock working hours aimed at generating employment prospects by allowing cinema halls, restaurants, shops, banks and other such workplaces to remain open 24/7.

Speaking to the representatives of the Media and Entertainment (M&E) sector, he said all their concerns would be resolved by the Government in a time bound manner. Considering the growth prospects of the Indian M&E industry for the economy, he assured that the concerns of the industry regarding new tax rates in the GST structure would be conveyed to the Finance Minister.

Addressing the CEOs Round Table Meeting organized by FICCI, the minister said a comprehensive review of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 including Copyright and IPR Protection issues, was under consideration in the light of the reports submitted by Mukul Mudgal and Shyam Benegal. It was imperative to believe in “responsible creativity” where in the censor rules and regulations could be weaved into social norms which affected the social fabric of the nation.

On the issue of Improving Screen Density in India, the Minister said that the reach of cinema was limited to a small segment and thus provided an immense opportunity for the film industry to tap the regional markets and cater to the needs of consumers by developing content in local and regional languages.

He assured that the issue has been taken up with the Multiplex Association of India to formulate Model Rules for building and operating cinema halls which once received would be shared and discussed with all the State Governments in the coming State Information Minister’s Conference scheduled in December. The State Governments would be requested to look into the matter and ease out the process in order to increase screen density throughout the country.

On the issue of grant of permissions to TV Channels, the Minister said that the Ministry had taken the initiative to streamline the processes and procedures in the broadcasting sector. He also mentioned about the E-Auction of the Second Batch of Private FM Radio Phase III Channels commenced a week ago. 266 FM Channels in 92 cities comprising 227 channels in 69 fresh cities and 39 unsold channels from 23 cities of batch I of Ph-III had been put on auction in the second batch.

The Minister said plans are afoot to set up a National Centre of Excellence for Media, to provide training to the industry professionals. The Ministry was also in the process to setup a Film Promotion Fund to support movies, including Bollywood and Regional films, for participation in foreign film festivals.

The audio-visual co-production agreements signed by the Government would help film industry to explore more resources and share best practices. He mentioned that the Cabinet has recently given approval to the agreement between India and Republic of Korea.
