Meta taps Indian-origin tech executive CJ Desai to lead enterprise AI push

Meta has appointed Indian-origin technology executive Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead its new enterprise platform, placing a former MongoDB chief executive at the centre of its efforts to turn artificial intelligence into products for businesses.

Desai will serve as chief enterprise platform officer and report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. His appointment comes less than a year after he took over as CEO of database company MongoDB in November 2025.

At Meta, Desai will oversee the development of an integrated enterprise platform bringing together the company’s AI tools and services. The initial offering is expected to include its Muse AI agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code, although the company has yet to announce pricing or a broader launch timeline.

The appointment signals Meta’s ambition to expand its AI business beyond consumer-facing products and advertising into tools that companies can use to automate workflows, develop applications and deploy AI agents. The challenge will be to turn its expanding AI capabilities into enterprise products that businesses are willing to pay for.

Desai’s experience spans enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and database technology, giving him a background across several markets Meta will need to navigate as it develops its business platform.

From Illinois to Silicon Valley leadership

Desai joined the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1993 and completed master’s degrees in computer science and business administration in 1995. In an interview published by the university earlier this year, he recalled struggling to finance both degrees before securing a research assistantship in the university’s physics department that helped cover his tuition.

He later established scholarships at the university to support other students.

A database course during his studies helped shape his professional direction. After graduating, Desai joined Oracle, where he spent more than seven years before moving into senior positions at Symantec and EMC.

He subsequently became president and chief operating officer of ServiceNow before taking charge of product and engineering at Cloudflare. MongoDB appointed him CEO in November 2025, placing him in charge of a company whose database technology is used by developers building modern applications.

His move to Meta marks another transition in a career spanning several major enterprise technology companies.

MongoDB brings back former CEO

Desai’s departure has triggered a leadership change at MongoDB, which has brought back his predecessor, Dev Ittycheria, as interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent successor.

The transition comes as technology companies compete to establish a stronger position in enterprise AI, where customers are evaluating how AI agents and automation tools can improve productivity, software development and business operations.

For Meta, Desai’s appointment brings in an executive with experience managing enterprise products and large technology organisations. For MongoDB, his exit creates another leadership transition as the company navigates a rapidly changing software market.

Meta has not disclosed the pricing or launch schedule for its broader enterprise platform. Its commercial prospects will depend on how effectively it integrates its AI tools, differentiates them from competing offerings and persuades businesses to adopt them at scale.
