Nobel Economics Prize 2024 Goes to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson [Details]

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today that Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson have been awarded the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The prestigious prize recognizes their significant contributions to understanding how institutions are formed and their impact on national prosperity.

This year’s award marks the final Nobel Prize to be announced, concluding the 2024 Nobel Prize season. The economics prize, established in 1968 as a memorial award, acknowledges outstanding contributions to the field of economics.

Three Winners

  • Daron Acemoglu: Born in 1967 in Istanbul, Turkey, Acemoglu earned his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in 1992. He is currently a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA.
  • Simon Johnson: Johnson was born in 1963 in Sheffield, UK, and completed his Ph.D. at MIT in 1989. He is also a professor at MIT.
  • James A. Robinson: Born in 1960, Robinson received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1993 and is now a professor at the University of Chicago, Illinois, USA.

The award-winning research of Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson explores the relationship between institutions and prosperity across nations, shedding light on how the design and governance of institutions can influence economic outcomes.

The economics prize has a rich history, including recognition of influential figures such as Milton Friedman, who won in 1976 for his groundbreaking work in consumption analysis and monetary theory. Friedman was a strong advocate for free markets, and his ideas significantly influenced economic policy in the UK and the US. The Nobel committee continues to reflect on the impact of economics on society and the importance of institutions in shaping the global economic landscape.

KCET 2018 results for admission to engineering seats in Karnataka will be announced on Friday, June 1 as COMEDK, the other entrance test for private engineering colleges was announced on Monday, May 28.

Usually, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) usually conducts its counselling first for the government seats in engineering and other allied seats spread over state’s aided and unaided private colleges.

On may 16, KEA has opened the link to upload the board exam marks by candidates who have appeared for the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) 2018 and the results are due now since all boards have announced their PUC or class 12 exam results, including CBSE and ICSE.

KCET considers 50 percent of Class 12 or state Pre-university Course (PUC) marks and another 50 percent from the marks scored by candidates in respective subjects in KCET 2018. Since marks are already known to many candidates, the final ranking will help them seek admission based on it in respective colleges at government-fixed fee which is one-third less than the COMEDK fees for these seats.

The KCET 2018 results will be announced on the official website of KEA at kea.kar.nic.in, while the same will be made available on other websites as well in view of the volume of traffic online to check the results.

Held from April 18 to 20 this year, more than 1.98 lakh candidates in Karnataka had appeared for the exam seeking admission to B. Tech or BE programmes in various state universities, government colleges and private institutes.
How to check results?

ISRO to launch new satellite IRNSS-1H on August 31

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will launch its next satellite on August 31.

ISRO said it would put into orbit the IRNSS-1H satellite at 18:59 hours on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, using the rocket PSLV-C39 from Sriharikota. The payload would augment the capacity of India’s seven-satellite ‘NavIC’ constellation or the GPS equivalent in space.

The NavIC constellation consists of 3 IRNSS satellites located in suitable orbital slots in the geostationary orbit and the remaining 4 in geosynchronous orbits with the required inclination and equatorial crossings in two different planes. Configured identially, all the seven satellites are equipped with I-1K Bus to be compatible on-board the ISRO workhorse PSLV vehicle.

The first satellite in the series, IRNSS-1A developed a technical snag earlier, as its rubidium atomic clock failed in space, requiring the current satellite, which will take over the mantle of the first payload in the series.

IRNSS is an independent regional navigation satellite system being developed by India. It is designed to provide accurate position information service to users in India as well as the region extending up to 1500 km from its boundary, which is its primary service area. An Extended Service Area lies between primary service area and area enclosed by the rectangle from Latitude 30 deg South to 50 deg North, Longitude 30 deg East to 130 deg East.

IRNSS will provide two types of services, namely, Standard Positioning Service (SPS) which is provided to all the users and Restricted Service (RS), which is an encrypted service provided only to the authorised users. The IRNSS System is expected to provide a position accuracy of better than 20 m in the primary service area.

Some applications of IRNSS:

  • Terrestrial, Aerial and Marine Navigation
  • Disaster Management
  • Vehicle tracking and fleet management
  • Integration with mobile phones
  • Precise Timing
  • Mapping and Geodetic data capture
  • Terrestrial navigation aid for hikers and travellers
  • Visual and voice navigation for drivers
