Iran Claims Victory in Defeating Trump on Homefront as Midterm Rout Proves Cost of War Is Dearer Than Expected

Iranian leaders are portraying the Democratic Party’s sweeping victory in the US midterm elections as evidence that President Donald Trump’s war against Tehran has begun to undermine his political standing at home.

Mohsen Rezai, Iran’s security chief, said Wednesday that Tehran had inflicted a strategic defeat on Trump on the battlefield and in the Strait of Hormuz, followed by a political defeat in Washington after Democrats captured both chambers of Congress.

“The Iranian nation handed Trump a strategic defeat on the battlefield and in the Hormuz — and a political defeat in Washington,” Rezai wrote on X.

He also argued that Americans were paying the financial price of the conflict, warning that any country confronting Iran would face consequences extending beyond the battlefield.

“Anyone who takes on Iran will pay the price — from the battlefield to their own doorstep,” he said.

The remarks came as Republicans suffered a major setback in the November 3 midterm elections, with Democrats winning control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to projected results.

Iran Sees Political Opportunity in Republican Defeat

Tehran has seized on the election outcome to reinforce its argument that Washington’s military campaign has carried significant domestic political costs.

The conflict, which began with US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, has disrupted energy markets and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies.

The war has also contributed to rising fuel prices and economic uncertainty in the United States, issues that became central to the midterm campaign.

US Vice President JD Vance acknowledged the conflict’s role in the Republican defeat, writing on X that “the reason we lost is the war”.

Trump also conceded that the Iran conflict had contributed to the electoral setback, saying it had pushed gasoline prices higher in the short term.

Iranian officials have interpreted those remarks as an acknowledgment that the conflict has created political vulnerabilities for the US president.

However, Tehran’s declaration of victory remains a political assessment rather than an independently established military conclusion.

Tehran Warns Washington Against Expecting a Policy Shift

Despite celebrating the Democratic victory, Iran’s leadership has dismissed the possibility that a change in congressional control will fundamentally alter Washington’s approach toward Tehran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said those expecting a change in US hostility because of partisan shifts were mistaken.

He also warned that any renewed aggression against Iran could lead to a wider conflict.

The statement signals that Tehran does not regard the midterm outcome as a reason to soften its position in negotiations with Washington.

The election results could nevertheless complicate Trump’s domestic political calculations as his administration weighs its next steps in the conflict.

Democratic control of Congress could increase scrutiny of the administration’s military strategy, spending and diplomatic decisions. The extent of that pressure will depend on congressional priorities and the administration’s ability to sustain support for its policies.

For Iran, the election offers an opportunity to frame the conflict as a political liability for Trump while maintaining its own hard-line position.

The central question now is whether the change in congressional control will translate into meaningful pressure for a diplomatic settlement or leave the military confrontation largely unchanged.
