Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha has become the subject of social media memes after a promotional poster showed Sugriv, a vanar character, wearing modern spectacles. The image prompted questions about the film’s visual treatment of the Treta Yuga, with users mocking the apparent use of contemporary eyewear.

The makers have now clarified that the viral image is promotional artwork and does not represent a scene from the theatrical version of the film. They described the circulation of the image as an actual movie frame as “misleading”.

The promotional artwork shows Sugriv, portrayed in human form, wearing spectacles. The image quickly became a talking point on social media, with users questioning why a modern-looking pair of glasses appeared in a story set in the Treta Yuga.

  • One user on X (formerly Twitter) joked, “Bhai ne to peak detailing main Aditya Dhar ko peeche kar diya.”
  • Another wrote, “Ab ek buddha Aadmi chashma bhi na lagaye. This is not my India.”
  • A third user commented, “Why not, dude… didn’t people have eyes in the Treta Yuga or what?”
  • Another mocked the visual, writing, “Ye kesi vanar sena hai. Evolution kuch jyda hi jaldi hogaya.”

Makers challenge critics to identify a scene

Speaking to the media, the makers said the viral artwork should not be treated as a still from the film. They challenged those claiming that the theatrical version contains the same visual to provide evidence.

“If this visual is actually present in the film, share one genuine screenshot photographed inside a theatre, or give us the exact scene and time code where a vanar is shown wearing spectacles. We will respond publicly,” the makers said.

They added that promotional artwork being circulated as though it were an actual scene from the movie is misleading. The makers also said they would release footage from the theatrical version alongside some of the viral claims, allowing audiences to compare the promotional images with the finished film.

Director Abhishek Singh said the team was open to criticism but argued that it should be based on the film audiences have actually watched. Actor Anjali Arora, who plays Sita, has also addressed criticism of her casting. She said she faced judgments about her portrayal before audiences had seen her performance because of her previous work.

“From the day my casting was announced, there were people who had already decided what my Sita would be without seeing even one scene. I always said only one thing, don’t judge Sita through your opinion of Anjali. Watch the character on screen. If you watch the complete film and still feel I didn’t do justice to it, I will respect that opinion. But watch it first.”
