Friends and neighbours of Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar have described him as calm, disciplined and humble, recalling the qualities they believe helped him respond during a confrontation in the cockpit of a flydubai aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Machchhar was injured during an altercation with the co-pilot aboard Flight FZ1073 on Wednesday. Despite his injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene and help bring the situation under control.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All 174 people aboard were reported safe.

In Mumbai, where Machchhar grew up, friends and neighbours said the incident had left them proud and deeply concerned about his recovery. Their accounts offered a glimpse into the life of a pilot whose actions aboard the aircraft had drawn attention to his role in averting a potentially dangerous situation.

Childhood Friend Recalls Pilot’s Composure

Prateek Gandhi, a childhood friend and neighbour, said he felt proud that someone from his residential building had played a role in protecting so many lives. “He was someone who grew up with us, and it makes me proud that someone from our building has contributed to such a cause,” Gandhi told IANS.

He recalled Machchhar as a composed person from childhood, saying his ability to remain calm under pressure appeared consistent with the character he had known for years. “With his sixth sense and presence of mind, he saved 174 people,” Gandhi said.

He added that a person’s fundamental nature often remains unchanged despite the experiences and responsibilities that come with adulthood.

“A person might change, but the base of that person remains the same,” he said. Videos that emerged after the incident also appeared to show Machchhar remaining composed during the emergency, Gandhi said.

An older neighbour who had known the pilot’s family for years remembered him as a quiet child who spent time playing around the residential complex.

“He used to play around in the building. While growing up, he kept to himself and never bothered anyone,” the neighbour said. He described Machchhar as disciplined and hardworking, qualities that he believed had helped him build a career in aviation.

“He was very disciplined and worked hard. That is how he became a pilot,” he said. The neighbour said he struggled to express his emotions after learning what had happened aboard the flight.

Aviation Career Spanning More Than 13 Years

A family friend also described Machchhar as humble and caring, saying she was praying for his safety and recovery.

“He is a really good friend of mine. I am praying for his safety and hoping that he is doing well,” she told IANS.

She said Machchhar’s parents live in India, while his wife and children are based in Dubai.

The family friend described his actions as particularly significant given that he was injured during the confrontation.

“He is wonderful and an amazing person, and just very humble,” she said.

Machchhar previously worked with Indian airline SpiceJet for more than 11 years before joining flydubai in 2022. He has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience and over 9,500 flying hours, according to publicly available information cited in the report.

The incident has highlighted the importance of cockpit security and crew coordination during an in-flight emergency. While the precise circumstances of the confrontation and the sequence of events leading to the aircraft’s diversion require further official clarification, accounts from Mumbai have focused on the pilot’s actions and the personal qualities remembered by those who knew him.

For his friends and neighbours, the episode has transformed a familiar face from their residential community into a figure associated with an extraordinary aviation emergency. Their immediate concern, however, remains his recovery.
